How is it already September? This fall is a big one in our house—my daughter Lily, who’s almost 2.5, is heading back to her Montessori school! She went in the spring and absolutely loved it, so we’re both excited for round two. Of course, going back to school also means tackling that very long supply list the school sent home. Some of the items are super fun (hello, watercolor paints and magic markers), while others are the not-so-glamorous but totally necessary basics (looking at you, gallon-size Ziplocs). To keep myself organized, I checked off each item as we picked it up, and now Lily is officially ready for her new school year. Since I know how overwhelming shopping for toddler school supplies can be, I thought I’d share exactly what we bought. Consider this your peek inside our school bag—equal parts practical and playful!

- Watercolor set (they specifically asked for Crayola)
- Translucent packing tape
- Sheet protectors (For her art portfolio)
- Plastic Safety Scissors
- Washable magic markers
- 3-inch three ring binder (used as her art portfolio)
- Whiite copy paper
- Elmer’s liquid glue
- Construction paper
Not shown (to be honest, because they are not cute)
- Gallon size Ziploc Bags
- Box of latex gloves (diaper changes)

And then as a second section, on the list were more vague requests like “Complete change of clothes & a plastic box with child’s name on it (shoe box size) to store clothes” and “Packet of diapers and wipes” so I have included what specific items we are sending.
Basic Essentials
- Water Wipes
- Toddler Utensils
- Backpack (large enough for lunch box)
- Lunch box
- Cloth Placemats
- Pencil box (they were specific enough that it should be approx 5″ x 8″)
- Pull up Diapers
Toddler school supplies don’t have to be overwhelming! For Lily’s return to Montessori, I checked off every item on the list—fun art supplies, practical essentials, and even the not-so-cute stuff. This is what she will go back to school later this week – let me know if your kiddos school list are different!

We also had to provide a lot of arts and craft supplies as sadly the school budgets have been cut so much.
The teachers really believe as do I that children expressing themselves thru art and then having something to bring home adds a richness to their day. They are so proud at pick up to show me or whomever picks them up what they made and gives us a wonderful launch pad into a meaningful conversation.
