There are major holidays – Easter, Christmas, New Year’s, etc. Then there are country specific holidays, 4th of July, Boxing Day, etc. And then are holiday’s that fall on weekends like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. And then we come to the ones that almost seem a little made up like National Administrative Professionals Day (annually on April 24th) or world Sisters Day (the first Sunday in August). Why do I mention all of these? Because when I moved to the UK I found out the entire country celebrates World Book Day on the first Thursday in March.
Across England and Ireland World Book Day is celebrated by children dressing up as their favorite character from a book. The nursery where Lily goes said it best:
“We’re excited to announce that next week, we’ll be celebrating World Book Day with special celebrations at our nursery. On Thursday, the 7th of March, we invite all children to participate by dressing up as their favourite book characters. It’s a fantastic opportunity for our children to immerse themselves in the world of literature and showcase their creativity. Additionally, we encourage you to send your child to nursery with their favourite children’s stories, as we’ll have time set aside for shared reading learning experiences. Let’s come together to make this World Book Day a memorable and enriching experience for our children. Thank you for your support!”
Older kids got very creative but as Lily is not yet a year and can not walk our options were a bit more limited. Our first thought was Gruffalo but a brown monster isn’t very cute, then we tried a tiger outfit but it was too big so our third option was the winner – a dragon! One of Mark’s favorite books to read Lily is Zog by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s where Zog is the keenest dragon in school but also the most accident-prone. Take a look at our baby Zog, my World Book Day dragon:
And two outtakes that I still wanted to include – the first, I took all of the photos but thought a selfie would be cute but Lily thought eating my face would be better. And then the last shot as we headed out the door to nursery, an adorable shot of the back of her costume.
What do you think of my little world book day dragon?

Where did you ever get an outfit that matches the book character so well?
She is too cute and so glad that she likes books.
Keep up the good work.

I’ve never heard of world book day. I feel like I’ve been living under a rock. How have I missed this important day.
Sometimes I really worry that children will never have books in their hands or read books. I have so many fond memories of staying up late reading some of my favorite books under the sheets with a flashlight. I hope your Lily has the love of reading that I had.

Oh my she is getting so big and in one of those photos I can see some of her teeth.
Where does the time go?
What a cute idea and that costume….to cute.
