My New York City Bucket List

01/19/17 | New York City

My New York City Bucket List - Fifth Ave View - Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum New York
An Afternoon at The Guggenheim – July 2014

Why is it that short weeks always tend to be the busiest?   Now I am no means complaining coming off a long weekend but squishing five days of work into four isn’t always peachy-keen, especially when it is freezing out.  One thing that is making me really happy right now, though, is how well my South Street Seaport photoshoot turned out this weekend.  (You can see a sneak peak here).  I am so excited to show you more!  Another is that restaurant week is coming up in NYC and a third, that there is still so much to do in my city as we start 2017 on a fresh slate!

As you know, I like to consult Trip Advisor when I visit a new city and over the weekend I took a look at what they suggest in my own city.  Of the Top 30 Things to To Do in New York City I have been to Central Park, The National 9/11 Memorial & Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, seen the Manhattan Skyline, taken a City Tour, walked The High Line, been to Broadway, seen Grand Central Terminal, visited the Frick Collection, been past the Empire State Building, seen Broadway Shows, taken a walking tour, been to Bryant Park, climbed Statue of Liberty, worshiped in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, reflected at Ground Zero Museum Workshop, seen a performance at Radio City Music Hall, skated at Rockefeller Center, been in the New York Public Library, visited the The Met Cloisters, watched a game / concert / circus at Madison Square Garden, taken a boat tour, seen Times Square, been to the The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and taken a Historical & Heritage Tours.  And holy heck that may be the longest sentence that has ever been published on Sparkles and Shoes!

Of the top things to do that leaves:

#4 Top of the Rock Observation Deck

#16 One World Observatory – World Trade Center,

#19 The Staten Island Ferry

 #26 The Tenement Museum

Of 30 items I am quite pleased that I have crossed off more than 85% of them but I hope I can finish these four in the coming year and get it to 100%. I am adding these four to the unfinished New York City bucket list from my 101 in 1001 list that was not completed when the 1,001 days came to an end in December. They include:

Explore Prospect Park in Brooklyn

Go to MoMa PS1 during a music event

Wait in line for a Cronut

Visit The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum

See a Shakespeare in the Park production

Take a trapeze lesson at South Street Seaport

Now that we have a nice list of ten I could just leave it there but since this is the year of no excuses I am going to add three more that were not a big deal when I first made my 101 in 1001 list in 2013 or I did not know about:

Seeing the Broadway play Hamilton

Watch the Mermaid Parade at Coney Island

Visit The Whitney

I have lived in New York City almost five years and I do my best when visiting another city to see everything it has to offer but am doing a bit of lack luster job in my own city so it is time to get going! Real life friends, let me know if any of these interest you at let’s go (thought maybe once it warms up a bit!)

If you have been, what is your favorite thing to do in NYC?

That all sounds so fun! I wish that I lived near a little more culture–I was sad to move away from DV after only a few years.
I’m visiting in May and I am going to look all of those up! Specifically, we will be there over Memorial Day weekend. I would love to read a post about NYC in the spring and what to wear so that my husband and I don’t stick out like sore thumb tourists. I have orthopedic issues, so I am hoping to get by with those trendy sneakers that are not a running shoe, but more comfy than flats.
Also, we want to go where locals like to go, so a post on that would be really cool, since there are so many top 30 places lists!

The Frick is one of my favorite museums in the world!

FYI, plan to visit the Intrepid an a nice day as a lot of the planes are outside and you will want to take your time admiring them. I have never been to the Tenement Museum. Look forward to reading the blog post on that!
