My Favorite Green Juice

01/15/14 | Delicious Eats

The best part about having a juicer is that you can throw just about anything in and it will be delicious. Since I got my Breville a year ago I have tried just about every combination of fruits and veggies I could think of with great success. The thought was to see how I liked juicing and if it went well take a step up from my $100 Breville Compact Juice Fountain to a big-boy juicer.  It turns out, my little guy does everything I need it to!

There are certain combinations I learned to avoid (I will never again but garlic or radishes in my juicer)  and through trial and error I found my favorites.  Apparently this is unusual, but the first juice I ever tried was all green vegetables.  I loved it from the get-go so I never did the intro, carrot, watermelon, orange combination that intro-juicers are recommended to try – I went straight fro the big guns.

It is true that the greener the vegetables, the more nutritionally valuable they are, and for some – the less palatable.  I have to disagree though, a juice with mainly greens and a bit of fruit is my favorite. Here is how how you make it:

My Favorite Green Juice:

2 Large Handfuls of Baby Spinach
1/2 English Cucumber
1 Granny Smith Apple
1 Head of Celery
2 Inches of Ginger Root
1 small lemon, to taste

I make this juice by first cutting the cucumber in half and placing it straight into the juicer, many people peel it but I fell like it is just an extra step, and that is the first thing in.  Then I cut the apple into three or four slices just so it will fit in the spout of the juicer – taking out the core is optional but I do it because it less clean up later. As you can see in the third picture, the celery goes in as-is.  Then I add the spinach and top it off with about two inches of ginger.  I have tried actually putting the lemon in the juicer before but I have found I like it much better when I squeeze the lemon in the finished product.  And, of course, it goes without saying that all of the vegetables are washed first.

The biggest juicing tip I have learned so far? Because friction from the juicer warms up the juice, use frozen produce or toss a couple of ice cubes into the machine to cool things down.

I make this juice more than I should but since it is so healthy, why not!

Do you juice? What is your favorite?

I’ve never really considered it before, but now I am seriously contemplating buying a juicer! If I do, I will definitely try this recipe out!

I’ve been wanting to start up juicing, but I am just not sure what juicer is best. Plus, it’s kind of intimidating to me for some reason!

I’m doing a juice cleanse right now, so this was perfect to read some juice combinations. I’m pretty much obsessed with juicing. It’s so fun coming up with new combinations!

I’m not big on green juices, but green smoothies I am all over! My favorite combo is kale, kiwi, banana, pineapple and mango!

As long as there’s apple in my juices, I can handle unlimited greens. yum!

I have a magic bullet, so I’m looking to try some new green juice recipes. I am pretty picky though, so mine has to be really sweet with a lot of fruit!

I always go back and forth between juicing and smoothies. I love this recipe but I hate that you lose half of the fiber by juicing. But when you have stuff in the fridge thats going to turn brown….JUICE IT! lol
