Cleaning out my closet was not my 2024 resolution but I do not think anyone would disagree that it is a good thing to do. At the start of January while we were putting away Christmas decorations I got a burst of energy to go through my closet and tubs of clothing I have in storage. Thinking back part of this was likely spurred on the success I have had lately on Vinted. Since Lily started nursery in late October the amount of clothes she needs / goes through is insane and while I want her to have nice things, it is a balance.
For instance, I knew she needed a new snowsuit (it is going to be 17C this week, eek!) but a new baby snowsuit she will only fit into for a few months seems to avergae $75-$120 if you buy them new. Instead I bought this Baby Boden snowsuit Pramsuit in excellent condition for less than $10 with shipping, that’s what we call a win! Buying a few things things on Vinted for Lily led me to selling a few and then I got on a roll. Plus what is better than winning auctions? Earning money from auctions!
As part of my closet clean out four bags have gone to charity and a handful of items have gone and will be going to give to friends and family. If no one wants them then I will list them for sale on my Vinted profile and ultimately if they don’t sell, then I will donate them. So what kind of items am I talking about? I have photos and descriptions of 10 such items are below.
None of these are bad by any means but I am getting rid of them for a variety of reasons – they are the wrong size, the fabric is itchy for me, the cut is not flattering, and some of them? They have hung in my closet for the past few years and I have not touched them. Since I thought it was interesting I have also listed when the photos of me wearing the items are from which go back as far as 2014 though i am sure some of them I have had even longer – at least half came with me from New York City in 2014! Take a look:

Just catching up on your blog and I really need to go through my closet. I realized when I needed to buy more hangers that probably what I really needed to do is get rid of clothes and I don’t wear very often. Do you have any tips how you sorted through yours?

Some of those items are really cute so I can see how it would be a good idea to sell them if they no longer fit you or just not your cup of tea.
It’s amazing how many things I bought, but I loved in the store and I wore them once or twice, but never really feel good when I’m wearing them. That’s sort of my go to point now that if I don’t feel like I can own an outfit and feel really confident when wearing it I’m not going to keep it.

I was trying to help my mom clean out her closet the other day, and she was pretty resistant. A friend of mine suggested, turning all the hangers backwards, and if at the end of the year, the hanger was still backwards then you obviously hadn’t worn it in a year. It’s advice. I’m taking for myself.
Sometimes it’s so hard to get rid of items that you have some fond memory of but then when you realize you haven’t worn it in forever, it’s time to go.

Glad you’ve had so much luck on that site and what a brilliant idea especially for some thing that Lily is going to grow out of. It’s one thing if you’re gonna have something for years but if it’s just a quick turnaround that sounds really smart. I should definitely go through my closet. Thanks for the reminder.

The one good thing about moving is you get to clean out your closets. It is amazing how many nooks and crannies get filled with stuff that you really never use.
My sister taught me the trick of turning my hangers backwards, and every time I wore something it got turned the right way. At the end of the year if something hadn’t been turned meaning it hadn’t been worn. It was time to go.
