Popped Collars

04/11/14 | Fashion and Style

Popped Collars - Josh Hartnett GQNo, it is not Thursday but this post is definitely a throw back.  The movie Pearl Harbor came out in 2001 at the very height of my Josh Hartnett crush.  Between him, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Affleck, and Jennifer Garner the epic love story was almost too much for my heart to handle.  I had photos of Josh torn from magazines on the front cover of every single one of my binders and he had gone to college just five miles from my hometown – I dreamed that one day we would just run off into the sunset to get married.

I had seen him in a few movies but when Pearl Harbor came out I was like a little girl on Christmas. I will never forgive on girl on the bus, Danielle, who when I told her my mom finally let me rent the movie from Blockbuster and was going to watch it that weekend she said, “Don’t get your hopes up, Danny dies half way through the movie”.  I found this photo of Josh from GQ and the popped collar brought back so many memories!

In middle school and into high school I was the freaking queen of popped collars.  Well polos actually, I wore them to school and in my spare time.  Honestly I treated the polo the way most people treated a t-shirt – it went with everything and anything and I always made sure to pop the collar.  I owned the trend. For five years I had polos in a dozen different colors and wore them constantly.  Why, oh why, did someone not clue me in – I look SPECIAL to put it lightly in some of these shots:

Around junior year of high school I decided to wise up and try different styles of shirts.  While my quality investments from Forever21 and WetSeal may not have been the best choices at least I took a break from this trend. However, as it was part of my identity for so long I have stayed on top of it and last spring when the Wall Street Journal declared The Return of the Popped Collar I thought it was going to be back with vengeance.  Nope.  While I no longer pop my collar if you are going to do it, do in like this:

Nina from After the Bar 40 Finish Popped Collars
Men's Streetstyle Popped Collar
Miranda Kerr Popped Collar
Alyssa from Sincerely, Truly Scrumptious Popped Collar

Mary from The Classy Cubicle Popped Collar
Josh Hartnett / Nina from After the Bar 40 Finish / Mens Streetstyle /  Miranda Kerr
Alyssa from Sincerely, Truly Scrumptious / Mens Sportscoat / Mary from The Classy Cubicle
But Ryan, as much as I love you, this is not your best look:

And with that, Happy Friday!  But first, popped collars – in or out?

I would have thought you were so cool in high school with the popped collar! I remember it being so trendy but I could never pull it off. Nowadays I do occasionally pop the collar of my jean jacket 🙂

I am such a Ben Affleck fan…but Josh Hartnett in Pearl Harbor beat out even Ben Affleck in my book – which says something. LOVE the tie-in to popped collars too, haha. Hope you’re having a great weekend!

Oh, Josh Hartnett. *swoon* I, too, had a MAJOR crush on him at that time! I also loved Ben Affleck, so Pearl Harbor was gut wrenching for me! How could she choose between them?! I totally felt that pain and cried a lot during that movie! Haha

Sometimes this is a good look, but I think it depends on personality of the person. Stuck up people just shouldn’t pop their collars, it just makes them that much more unapproachable!

I think it depends on the look. Sometimes I love it, and sometimes I hate it!

Haha! There was a time that I did the popped collars too. Who knows, it may come back “in” again like so many other trends.
