Halloween and the NYC Marathon

11/02/15 | New York City

Halloween Pumpkin

This weekend is one of my favorites every year-  the New York City marathon always takes place on the first Sunday in November and the past few years this has meant the two great events, Halloween and the 5-borough race, overlap. As I mentioned before I had to dress up at work on Friday for Halloween and my entire table decided to go as my boss, dressing as a marathon runner.  Let me tell you, it was by far the most comfortable costume I have ever worn.  I would show you the group photo we took but as I did not ask each of my coworkers if it was alright if they could be on the blog I will have to omit those. Our team of ten got second place in the “group” category costume contest and I love my friend Jackie’s take on Frida Kahlo below.

On Saturday night I dressed as a prisoner, convict, or escapee, whatever you want to call it. I was planning on being an evil devil as I eluded to but changed my mind two days before when I saw this costume on sale.  Even though I hated Orange is the New Black I took one a page out of their book and did a very glammed up inmate look.  I recently got this Giorgio Armani Rouge d’Armani lipstick in Plum 608 and it is to die for.  It stayed on all night and people kept asking me where it was from!

Once all dressed up I went to a friend’s house for a few drinks.  My friends got very creative with their costumes and we headed out as a Lisa Frank angel cat, a nerd, and two Clark Kent / Supermans, one female and one male. We met up with more friends in Alphabet City where we bar hopped in our costumes and ended up getting pizza, well, because pizza. My only regret of the evening?  Not getting a better picture of the killer leather boots I wore!

The next morning I got up bright and early to watch the New York City Marathon. It is one of my favorite days of the year especially since the marathon is right outside my window. Before the elite runners start there is an entire section of wheelchair racers which is one of the highlights every year.  After the wheelchair races I got to see the elite women followed by the elite men and then the hoards of runners followed 20 minutes later, from a trickle to a massive wave that did not end for two hours.  One thing that made this year even better – this marathon was the first time I’ve seen blind runners compete, they had a with a foot long rope circular bungee connecting the runner and the guide, truly amazing.

While drinking vast quantities of coffee at Mile 17 I cheered on thousands and thousands of runners from friends, coworkers, and friends of friends to Alicia Keys, James Blake, and the producer of Catfish. It may have killed my battery but between the NYC Marathon app and the live updates on Twitter I really felt like I was in the know at all times. I have no pictures of my actual friends running because I was too busy cheering for them along with all of the people with their names on their shirts and those who got all decked out – from the man running in a Speedo with the British flag on it (and nothing else) to the man in the full body Elvis onesie.
