There only are few places in New York City as magical as Lincoln Center at night. The five story archways are beautifully cast in a golden light, it is quiet, and well dressed people casually stroll across the courtyard to or from the opera, ballet, or a play. On Saturday night I got to be one of those people as I headed up to the Upper West Side with my family after dinner.
When my parents come to town I love that we got to a Broadway play, in the past three years we have seen Kinky Boots, If/Then, Book of Mormon, and Jersey Boys, and this time was no different. I was so excited when my parents told me we would get to see The King and I.
Kelli O’Hara?, the woman who played Anna Leonowens, the main character in the play, was incredible. Here voice is another level and 20 minutes into the play I understood why she took home the Tony this year for the best actress. Over the course of the three hour performance I lost count of how many times my dad rolled his eyes when my brother, mom, and I danced and mouthed the words to our favorite songs from the musical. Getting to know you (Getting to know you, Getting to know all about you, Getting to like you, Getting to hope you like me) ) and Shall We Dance (Shall we dance? On a bright cloud of music shall we fly?) were two of our favorite numbers growing up. Here is a great clip of the first song!
After the play was over we took a stroll from the theater to the center of Lincoln Center and took a few photos by the fountain. I am very happy to report that we were able to take a great family photo, which all four of us agree will be our Christmas card, and my brother was kind enough to take a few shots of me in a new dress I got in Prague. (Thank you Meme!)
It was a great play and a great night!
