Happy Memorial Day! Growing up with a younger brother close in age I watched enough war movies to pick up on a few things and one of them was the phrase “got your six”, it means “I have got your back.” As you may have seen on social media, on Thursday the 14th I attended the Macy’s American Icons event in new York City and while they sponsored the original post and my attendance this one is all me. I had such a great time at the event I wanted to share – especially about the phenomenal charity I was introduced to.
Got Your 6 is a campaign inspired by the belief that veterans are leaders, team builders, and problem solvers who have the unique potential to strengthen communities across the country. They work to integrate these perspectives into popular culture by engaging veterans and civilians together to foster understanding, and empower veterans to lead in their communities. At the event Macy’s honored America’s veterans with an in-store program to support the non profit. To help with this they invited two Got Your 6 spokesmen, Marine Corp veterans Phil Klay and J.W. Cortes.
I had the chance to hear Phil Klay read read from his short story collection Redeployment about his time as a Marine and it was very moving. I must not have been the only one who thought so as it won the National Book Award for fiction in 2014. After he read and signed copies of his book I heard from J.W. Cortes. Meeting him before the event he told me he was going to be in the season finale of Blacklist that night as Agent Suarez. It was incredible how his story went full circle – from actually working at the Macy’s we were in, to his time in the Iraq wore, his experience as a New York City copy and now his journey into Hollywood. Both veterans were incredible and I feel honored to have met both of them at this event.
Along with having the chance to hear from two terrific Got Your 6 members at the event I went home and turned to Google to learn more about this terrific organization. And in case you need it from a different perspective take it from my boyfriend Bradley or my good friends Anna, Harrison, Sally, and Anne:
I write about so many things that interest me on this blog I am thankful to share one that has some weight on this great day, a day on which we remember those who died in active military service. Oh, and meeting Maksim Chmerkovskiy from Dancing with the Stars at the event was not bad either.

Such an inspiring work. I also donate to charities (WWF and World Vision). Reading this, though, reminded me of our war veterans. I don’t live in the US. But I remember and celebrate the lives of our heroes. Thanks for this lovely post <3 xoxo
Much love,
