Scrolling, Scrolling, Scrolling

11/19/13 | Instagram, social media

I must admit, whenever I get a Instagram notification or a Facebook alert that I have a new like my brain revs into over drive and questions start immediately running through my head – what was the last thing I posted? Was it interesting? Who could have liked it? The chances are it’s some amazing person in blog land liking something on the Sparkles and Shoes Facebook page or a commented in response to one of my silly pics on Insta but every once in a while I am left scratching my head…

For example, last week this picture below got a like. It is the 432nd most recent photo on my personal Facebook page. Really random girl from high school? Were you stalking old photos? Taking a trip down memory lane? Strange seeing as how we haven’t spoken in six years.  This photo is from my Florence album dated May 21, 2011and I am the only person tagged in it.  There is no other way you could have come across it…

Very odd.  I didn’t tell anyone about it nor did I contact the girl.  I did, however, think about writing a blog post about Facebook stalking but decided against it.  Then on Saturday night I got a notification that someone liked my photo on Instagram.  A few hours before I had posted a picture of my friend Kristen and I at her birthday so I was expecting the like to be of that photo.  Nope….

It was not a like on that photo, but on one I had posted 52 weeks before.  Fifty-two weeks,  meaning this week last year.   Did someone really scroll trough the 500+ photos I have posted since then to find this one?  If so, that is dedication and it is not even one of my best photos…  I blurred out the face and username of the user because I love every single “like” my photos get but really?

This activity, in both instances, can be referred to as Facebook social media stalking or the use of Facebook for acquiring information that is not obvious, and, if publicly revealed, would make the holder of said information look creepy. I think this terms is a bit harsh and because I appreciate every like or nod of affirmation regardless of source. I am going to rename this term:

Okay then, you must have been….
Scrolling, scrolling, scrolling.

I have to say that occasionally I am guilty of scrolling, scrolling, scrolling. It doesn’t happen often but sometimes I get sucked into someone’s blog or instagram and look at every single thing before stopping.

I get totally weirded out when people do that too. Even on a blog post from weeks ago makes me pause.

I have to say I get really excited about a “like” from wither Instagram or Facebook and when I see it is a super old photo I think “WTH?” I am so glad I am not alone! As for the blog post about FB stalking, I have one semi-complied in my drafts but I am scared to post it. It’s more about me “online researching” than anything!

I don’t have facebook, but I do it on instagram with new follows. If it’s someone I just added, I will totally go through all their photos from the beginning, I love to see everything!

I have a private account and generally try to make sure I know the people who are following me. It creeped me out so much when strangers went back and liked my photos from like a year ago!
