Bad Day? Do it Anyway

07/13/13 | Pinterest

Yesterday was just not my day:  I reconnected with a childhood friend.  To be invited to her dog’s funeral.  I straightened my hair. It rained.  I got a manicure. It dented within five minutes of leaving the salon.  I got all dressed up to go out to dinner. A homeless man told me I would be pretty if I was skinny.  I took a taxi home.  Stop and go traffic made me car sick. Yes, all first world problems but still, not fun.

There are those days where you just want to throw in the towel – it just is not worth finishing but I always have to remember that tomorrow is a new day. Whenever I have a bad day, I remember the  words of a very wise woman, and realize, my problems are not “real” problems and I am very thankful for the wonderful life I have.  This poem was found written on the wall in Mother Teresa’s home Children in Calcutta, India:

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies.
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you.
Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.
Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten.
Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.
Give your best anyway.

These short but simple mantras really touched me, and do you know what the final line is? It of course is simple, too the point, and follows the pattern but to me it really hits home:

It was never between you and them anyway.

This is not meant to be a religious push, this blog is far from that, I just wanted to share what gets me through a not-so-good day and I am so happy Pinterest reminded me of this wonderful mantra that I was taught in high school. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

I have had that saying in my wallet for over 15 years and it always serves its purpose. This year I read it at my end of year ceremony and my parents were a blur through my tears, but they were also bawling. Each of them vowed to help their children live this life in that way. Thanks for sharing your bad day and for showing us that we just need to keep going in spite of it all!
