Black Eyeliner

11/05/12 | CVS, favorite product, makeup, Sephora, Urban Decay

Happy Monday! Due to Hurricane Sandy I am still without power and Internet at my apartment, but even that can not stop my love for this wonderful product.  I absolutely love black eyeliner and it is a constant staple in my makeup arsenal.  On a weekly basis I use both pencils and liquids from the drug store (CVS) and from Sephora.  People frequently ask me what my favorites are on the high end and on a budget.  I have highlighted my four favorites below:

Best Pencils
NYC Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil  in Black 931A   ($1.99)
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Precision- Matte Blackest Black  ($24.00)

Best Liquid
Revlon Color Stay Liquid Liner  in Blackest Black   ($5.00)
Kat Von D Autograph Eyeliner in Puro Amor – Matte Jet Black  ($16.00)

I know that many people are scared of liquid liner because it of its very fluid state and how easy it is to mess up,  however, last summer while interning in fashion I learned the secret to end all secrets.  I was on the set of a photo shoot and the make up artist, whose fee was around $5,000 per day, was using liquid liner with ease. When he was done with model I askes what his secret was – he told me to always line the eye with a soft pencil exactly where you want the liquid to go, then when using the liquid make sure you do not habe too much on your brush, similar to nail polish.  When you begin always start with the inner corner as close to lashe lime as possible and extend outward.  If it is your first, or even tenth, time do not attempt to do the whole lid in one stroke.  Use little strokes as close to the lash line as possible.  When you are done you will have a dramatic look similar to a professional because they places where you missed have black pencil underneath!

I live off of liquid eyeliner. That’s only a slight exaggeration. When I wear makeup, it’s black liquid eyeliner. The pencil always smudges and creases and ends up near my eyebrows.

Okay, looooved the tip on using liquid eyeliner. About four years ago, I bought expensive Chanel liquid liner and after a dozen attempts became so frustrated that I couldn’t apply it, I threw it away. I wish I had known about the pencil back then lol. These days I use black crayon liner.

I recently bought liquid black eyeliner and found that I’m pretty good at applying it. It takes a steady hand but luckily I am also pretty good at nail painting so I guess I’ve perfected the skill!
