My Jewelry

08/24/12 | jewelry, Kate Spade

My jewelry is one of my favorite things! I consider there to be four key items in this catagory: bracelets, necklaces, rings, and earrings and I organize my treasures as such.  On a “no jewelry” day I will wear a pair of white pearl studs, my gold Georgetown class ring, and a gold bow ring from Kate Spade. Then depending on my mood, my outfit, or the occasion I will accessorize accordingly.  Usually large bangles do not get paired with over sized cocktail rings and statement necklaces rarely overlap with big earrings .  Other than that, I have no real rules to how I apply my jewelry.

In high school my jewelry collection began as it was one of the only ways I could dress up my Catholic School uniform and show my individual style.  A white polo actually proved to be a great solid background for a statement necklace, drop earrings or fun bracelets.  Granted, freshman year my daily jewelry was pretty much limited to pearl studs and the occasional bangle, but to me it was stepping out and I got more adventurous as I progressed through my teen years.

In college I rationalized with myself that if I put together an outfit with cute jewelry it would somehow offset the fact that majority of the time I was walking around with sopping wet hair.  (Swim practice, sorry I’m not sorry).  I have honed my jewelry collection over the past few years getting rid of inexpensive items that look cheap or pieces that I have not worn in more than a year.  Doing this allows room for new things which I am always on the lookout for, even though I really do not need them. J
Even though my parents would disagree, I am in general a pretty organized person.  When I began my amassing jewelry collection I purchased an 80 pocket double sided hanging organizer from The Container Store that fit perfectly in my closet, taking up only the space of a heavy dress, and when I wanted to accessorize I would simply take out when I wanted to look at my pieces. However, I found that when all of these great items were hidden away in my closet I often didn’t wear them – a testament to the fact that if you cannot see it then you do not use it.

Over the past two years I have invested in new items that make my jewelry more visible.  Currently, I have my large cocktail rings and bracelets displayed on top my dresser on beautiful velvet stands. They provide ample viewing opportunity and showcase my pieces beautifully (I think black is the best background for almost everything in life).  The rest of my rings, along with my necklaces and earrings, live in my very innovative Hanging Jewelry Armoire, a Group-on purchase, that doubles as a full length mirror. I would highly recommend this genius black box to anyone who (a) has as much jewelry as me (b) is short on space or (c) needs something with some organization in order to see everything they have. This collection is my second most prized assortment of items (my grandfather’s stamp collection is my first and the shoes I have amassed over the last few years is the third).  Jewelry is definitely one of my favorite things!

N.B. Unlike some of my posts, these are all images I photographed of the jewelry currently in my room.
