Kinky Boots on Broadway

08/13/13 | New York City, Theater

On Friday night I got to see Kinky Boots on Broadway. I knew I was going to see a musical with my parents but they surprised me with tickets to this show.  They gave me the tickets over dessert an hour before showtime with the most adorable card which read, “Happy early birthday and happy belated Sparkles and Shoes birthday”.  I had heard of the play because of it’s Tony Award nominations and because of all its’ wins I was pleasantly surprised my parents were able to get tickets.

In case you had not heard of this musical here is a brief overview:  Kinky Boots is a musical with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein.  The Broadway play is based on the true story behind the 2005 film portraying the story of a struggling shoemaker and his drag queen business partner. It made its Broadway debut at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on April 4th of this year and the musical earned a season-high of 13 nominations at the Tony Awards.  The musical won six awards in June at the 67th Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Score for Cyndi Lauper, and Best Actor in a Musical for Billy Porter as Lola.

As in all Broadway shows, flash photography was not allowed during the performance so here are a few stock photos for around the Internet depicting only a few of the fantastic scenes:

When the curtain came down I did not want the show to be over.  Walking out the door I did not have any interest in a poster – I wanted a pair of shoes and to see it again!  All in all, I can not say enough positive things, the play was absolutely amazing!  The majority of the time I see selected quotes blown up outside of a theater I think they are a bit of an exaggeration but, “Marvelous” is only one of the many adjectives I would use to describe Kinky Boots. It is the best production I have ever seen on Broadway and my parents agree!

It was a fantastic early birthday present and I recommend it to all!
