Travel Diaries: Giant’s Causeway

Rocks at Giant's Causeway

My travel bug has bit hard and I am excited to say I have not one but two international trips coming up before the end of Summer but before we jump ahead,  let’s take it back. I am so thrilled to be brining you another travel post and I will share quite a few this month as my vacation to Ireland in October was now quite a while ago and I want to share all of the photos I took before I head off on my next adventure in theee weeks.   My day trip from Dublin to Belfast, the Capital of Northern Ireland and then to The Carrick-Rope Bridge with our last step being Giants Causeway before heading back, was perhaps the busiest and longest day I have ever had on vacation but it was incredible.

By this point in the day my amusement over the red telephone booths (Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom and thus they have all of the British traditions like red phone booths and English Pounds instead of Euros) had passed and I was ready to stretch my legs and explore the great outdoors. When you get to Giants Causeway on the coast on the Northern tip of Ireland you have to walk about a mile from the visitors center to get to the main attraction and while following the winding path I thought of what our tour guide told us about the legend – that these rock formations are the remnants of a causeway built by an Irish giant in Gaelic mythology to fight a Scottish giant.  However, the attraction –  40,000 interlocking basalt columns – was actually formed hundreds and hundreds of years ago after an ancient volcanic eruption. Take a look at my photos from the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Giant’s Causeway:

As you can tell the columns or rock formations really range in size and thank goodness when we arrived it had stopped raining only 30 minutes before which is why many are wet (and were very slippery).  Despite my lack of proper adventure attire I decided to take a Red Trail straight up the side of the cliff to the overlook and take the long way back to the visitor’s center.

And do you know the funny thing? I know exactly what my Dad is going to say about this post, “I liked your blog Kel, but way too many pictures, just three or four would do.” Thanks Dad, I hear you loud and clear but I like photos and was proud I went from 193 to the 16 featured above, hopefully they give you the sense of really being there!

Woudl you ever visit Giant’s Causeway?
