One of the top recommendations of friends and family alike was to make sure to pay a visit to the famed Chocolateria San Gines while in Madrid and boy was it good! Open 24 hours a day it can be found down a passage off the Calle Mayor where the number one thing to get at the cafe is the chocolate con churros – hot chocolate and churros – and when a place has been around since 1894 serving up the same thing, that is what you order.
On our first visit to the Chocolatería San Gines my mom and I made the trip, only three blocks from the Mercado de San Miguel, but when we saw how rich the chocolate was, and decided to come back another evening when we had not had quite so much for dinner. Two nights later, having planned for the delectable chocolate con churros we again journeyed down the alley, ordered and paid inside, watched the dozens of staff members pouring cup after cup of chocolate and then headed outside to find a table. Only a few minutes later our order of churros, six in total, and two cups of piping hot coffee were dropped at our table and it was pure heaven. Sure, the Chocolatería San Gines does serve a number of other dishes, which you can find on their website but why choose something else when 7,500+ reviews on TripAdvisor say this is what you should order?

Hi! I love churros y porras con chocolate in the winter, on a Sunday, for breakfast, it’s delicious, and then you have the whole day to take a walk and burn the calories 🙂
Best regards from Barcelona,
