My First Mud Run

06/20/16 | fitness, New Jersey

Team After Ain't No Mountain High Mudderella Obstacle

On Saturday I competed in my first ever mud obstacle course and had a blast! Run by the sister company of Tough Mudder I signed up for Mudrella two weeks before the start date and at nine a.m. showed up ready to go.  The race was comprised of 15 obstacle courses over five miles in and around a race track in New Jersey along with over 6,000 participants almost all of whom were women.

The wonderful team at Vega invited me to participate and I brought along Samantha, you can see us below in our matching pink tanks, which made for an excellent group of eight very fit ladies.  The event was not timed which actually turned out in our best interest otherwise the lines that formed before certain obstacles definitely would have impeded us.  Take a look at some of the best pictures from the day and a big shoutout to my friend James for coming along as a spectator as he gets extra props for following us around to all of the obstacles and capturing these moments.

The first few obstacles had us doing more traditional team bonding exercises with ropes and tires and there was only mud in one obstacle – the bear crawl under wire.   Of the dozen intense literal and metaphorical hurdles we overcame the the most intense and ridiculous obstacle was definitely Ain’t No Mountain High which had five hills and five valleys of  deep mud pit. The website describes this particular obstacle as, “Make your way up mounds of mud, slide down into valleys of it, and trudge arm-in-arm with your team onto the next one. By the time you reach the end of this mountain and valley landscape you’ll be covered head-to-toe in muck, and not mad about it,” and that pretty much sums it up.  There was no way to get out of this one clean:

If you are really curious you can take a look at the course map from Saturday’s Mudderella and it will show you that you we were only half way through the course.  From there we jogged in our very wet and soggy sneakers another two and a half miles through an array of challenging obstacles where we scaled walls, dove it pits of mud, and at one point literally carried each other across the course.

Even though it was only five miles it the mud definitely slowed us down and when our group of eight finished the race after an hour and a half the closest stop was the beer tent but we picked up our free tshirts, purple finisher headbands, and Vega power bars and made a bee-line to the bag check where our nice clean, dry clothes were waiting.  After hosing off many of us donated our shoes – they had a whole set up for just this purpose –  then circled back for food and drink!

Oh, and for those who said I didn’t look that muddy based on my Snapchat pictures?  Well, I am guessing the photos above (thanks again James) will tell a different story and if you still do not believe me – check out this this photo below. Look at that pool of mud. Also look at my face.  And lastly at the grin on Sam’s face as she freestyles away from me.
