My Take on Strobing

01/29/16 | Beauty, makeup

Headshot with Shine

Strobing. After contouring, my easy one-step contour can be found here, it is the latest buzz word in the beauty world. Strobing is an an advanced form of highlighting where you take a light colored product and highlight the parts of your face you want to stand out, especially those where light would naturally hit it.

Before we get too much into strobing though, many might ask what is the difference between this and HAC (highlighting and contouring).  I will be honest, Cosmo said it best, “why look sculpted when you could look dewy?” Good question, Cosmo. The answer is – it depends what you are going for and this Kendall side-by-side is a great example of the difference.

Okay, so you want to highlight, where to start?  The first thing is to figure out where you want to apply your shimmer.  I love this diagram of Gigi as it points out some of the key areas that work for all face shapes – the bridge of your nose, the tops of your cheekbones, your brow bone, and your Cupid’s bow.

Then from there, pick your poison with the type of makeup and I have seen beautiful strobing results with photo finish primers, shimmer powder, highlighter stick, sheer blush, and many more. On occasions when I decide to strobe, and I will be honest, it is not that often, I actually choose to use ‘The Loose Shimmer’ Eyeshadow by Kevyn Aucoin Beauty. The key to choosing the right highlighter is to find one that complements your skin tone as you are going for a subtle sheen.

Now go forth and strive for the ultimate in strobing perfection:

What a cool thing! I’ve never been able to make contouring look natural, but I’d definitely give this a try. It seems easier. You look beautiful!
