What is a Statement Necklace?

I have mentioned it before but by this point, nearly a year to my new job, most of my coworkers known about my blog. This leads to some interesting questions and usually inquires in to the world of fashion. Recently I had a great one, “what makes a statement necklace, a statement necklace?” Well, that is a very good question.  When asked I defined it as a necklace that was very large and is usually made of colorful gemstones or crystals.  This answer got me thinking what is exactly is a statement necklace and that this would be a great blog post.  

To one up me, and it usually goes, Google says they are, “large necklaces with an excessive amount of dangle, beads, or intricate details and are made from a variety of materials and come in an infinite number of colors and color combinations.”  Okay then. Putting together this post were definitely a few necklaces I added to my cart but then remembered, I already have nine pretty ones:

And as I have been learning lately, when people ask one thing, they often compare the answer to its polar opposite.  So what is the opposite of a statement necklace?  A dainty one like the pendants and charms I featured in my layering necklace post!

    oooh they are all so pretty – the pearl one is my fave. i usually wear dainty necklaces for everyday but i love a big statement necklace for certain occasions. they are just so fun!
