A Snowy Weekend in Boston

02/19/14 | Boston, East Coast, family, Massachusetts, New England, The Americas, Travel, United States

I went up to Boston this past weekend for 48 hours to spend time with my family and to watch my brother, Kevin, in his very last Squash match.  It was also lucky that this trip was able to coincide with my cousin’s Massachusetts State swimming championships and an opportunity to tour around the snowy city with my parents for a very relaxing weekend.

After playing tourist it was off to Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a great double-header,
two of my favorite sports to watch, squash and swimming.
My brother, Kevin, won his final match in three straight sets!

I would have traveled up to Boston to see my brother play in his very last match many times over (he came to dozens of my swim meets including my last one) but the deal was sweetened when I learned my cousin Kyle was swimming in the Massachusetts’ State Championship in the same building!  I have mentioned it a hundred times and probably will a hundred more, I used to swim, and I love watching swimming.

It is unusual to have an entire championship meet take place in one morning – mine were usually spread over four days – but this allowed me to see my cousin race multiple times.  Below he is swimming with the silver cap at the bottom of the shot.  The most exciting, however, was when his relay set their school record, the meet record, and the state record in the 400 Freestyle Relay winning the meet and making All-American consideration – a huge deal!

Cheering for both sports with my Nana

My brother won his squash match and the team won the majority of their matches securing a victory over Johns Hopkins and a spot in the Top 30 for the season.  It was so nice to be able to have dinner with the team as there is very little opportunity to talk with the boys while they are playing.  I was seated with four players I had never spoken to and I had a blast trading stories with them about Georgetown and their plans for after school.  Plus, any dinner that starts with Pinot Grigio and authentic New England Clam Chowder is off to a good start!

One of my favorite family photos to date!

After the squash championship was over and my the swimming had ended we left our two athletes and visited the New England Aquarium.  I am not sure the last time I was at an aquarium but this one impressed me – plus you really can not go wrong with penguins and giant sea turtles!

Bye Boston, that was fun, let’s do it again some time soon!
