Piper, The One-Eyed Bulldog

If you know me, really know me, you know I am not animal person.  For about three months growing up I had a bunny and in my apartment there are hamsters, but pets are not really my things. I will stop and coo at a cute baby over a cute dog any day.

The story of Piper, the one-eyed and special needs English Bulldog who paints just melts my heart. This is her story as told by her mom/owner Jessica Stone:

Piper is somewhat handicapped (handicapable) because of a limp, terrible hip dysplasia and arthritis. She can barely walk a block. The only thing she runs for is food. After six weeks of Piper excitedly wobbling into the studio every time I painted, I realized something fantastic was happening in her eyes and wondered if she had a desire to paint. All I had to do was shake up a can of paint, rustle paper or clang palette knives and she appeared. 

I put a paintbrush in Piper’s mouth and held out a piece of paper. Her first attempt and painting “Introduction” was a success! Piper didn’t run away with the brush or splatter paint everywhere. She stayed in one place and worked her magic. Piper’s technique is very basic and seems instinctual. Maybe Piper is mimicking me? I don’t know what drives her. All I know is that she truly enjoys painting and it’s a great way for us to bond. 

The most incredible thing is that the paintings are really good and you can by them through  Piper’s Etsy shop.  Her reproductions are what most people buy because they’re affordable at $20.  The originals range from $55 for a 6×6 to $240 for a 16×20.  Piper sells her paintings and products for a good cause, donating a portion of the profits to charities like the San Antonio Bull Dog Rescue among others.

Piper’s owner estimates that she has made over 150 original works of art in the little over two years Jessica has had the beautiful bulldog.  These are some of my favorites:

    I just heard about this, and it’s so sweet! I’m actually not a pet person either, and it’s allll because of Will that we have a dog. Don’t get me wrong, I love Weiser, but if I had my way, I’d prefer to live sans pet.
