With the Opening Ceremonies for the XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014 in Sochi two weeks from today I really have had the Olympics on my mind. I was at a Smirnoff (one of my fantastic sponsors) event last night and flipping through pictures on my Instagram account when I came across the one with Apolo Ohno, this one. The three people I was talking to did not know who he was. How does that happen? How do you not know who Apolo Anton Ohno is? Well, maybe it is just fashion people. I absolutely love the Olympics and you will probably be seeing a lot about it over the next couple of weeks on Sparkles and Shoes. With that in mind, two summers ago I visited the site of original Olympics. Olympia, a sanctuary of ancient Greece in Elis, is known for having been the site of the Olympic Games in classical times, the most famous games in history. The Olympic Games were held every four years throughout Classical Antiquity, from the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD. The first Olympic Games were in honor of Zeus.
I realize in retrospect touring a very dirty, ancient site was probably not the best idea in Rainbow Sandals was not my best idea but they are seriously the most comfortable shoes I own. I will swear, up, down, and side ways.
I learned a tremendous amount while visiting the site it amazing amazing to learn there are remnants dating back to the 10th century BC – when we find things in America we are impressed when things are three or four hundred years old. I did not even include photos of the field, a big expanse of grass that you can find anywhere. Still, the Archaeological Site of Olympia was a site to be seen. Bucket list item crossed off!

Your post brought me back to July 2012 when I visit Greece for the first time. I find Athens amazing and there’s so much history to learn from this city. The ruins in this city definitely give it more character =)
