I was in the group of girly girls who sat behind the stone wall and tried to do two coats of sparkly polish in the 20-minute time frame and write down our dreams and goals in our Lisa Frank journals. For some reason one day this was not allowed any more. The teachers decided it was mandatory for us to “play” cough cough exercise at recess.
Teacher: Kelly, why are you not playing?
Kelly: I do not want to.
Teacher: Kelly it is important that you get your daily exercise.
Kelly: I am doing that at 4:30. I have swim practice.
Teacher: Swimming does not count as exercise. Running does.
Kelly: {see below}
Teacher: Don’t roll your eyes at me.
Kelly: I am sorry, I didn’t mean to.
Teacher: That does not matter. You are in TIME OUT.
Yes, we did have time out in 4th grade. Special, I know. I had to sit by the door to the school for the rest of receess. All eight minutes of it. Perfect, the ideal way to get out of running around the field or using the jungle gym.
During the rest of fourth grade I perfected the eye roll.
I have to be careful in the real world that I do not let this bad boy out too often – the consequences might be much worse than an eight minute time-out. Secretly though, I am channeling some other ladies who have perfected the gesture:

I use to get in trouble all the time when I was younger for rolling my eyes. They’d always say “your eyes will get stuck that way.” Fyi, they didn’t.

I was just reading your post on Back East Blonde (loved) so I came over here to find this *gem* of a post! I had a teacher put me in “time out” for eye-rolling when I didn’t realize I was eye-rolling too. When she took me out of time out and had a talk with me about what I did I had to make a conscience effort not to eye roll because really who puts someone in time out for an eye roll? ha

Hahaha! I don’t recommend rolling one’s eyes at one’s teacher (as a teacher, that infuriates me), but she totally deserved that. How is swimming NOT exercise!?!? (Also, LOVE Mary Crawley!)

The art of eye rolling seems to be an inherited trait haha My nieces have it down already and they are only 6!

I’ve got that eye roll down pat….and so does my significant other….at me…like 5 times a day. Tell that old bittie swimming is way better cardio than running!

I’m a constant eye-roller. It cracks me up to see my niece already doing it. She’s not even 2 so she doesn’t “get it” but oh, she’s going to be good!
