I Have A Dream

01/20/14 | bucket list, holiday, Washington D.C.

Today across the United States we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On August 28, 1963, the civil rights activist delivered a speech titled “I Have a Dream”  to over 250,000 civil rights supporters from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington. Decades later it was voted the best American speech of the 20th century.  An expert:

Let us not wallow in the valley of despair, I say to you today, my friends. And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”

While my dreams may not be as lofty as Doctor King’s every year on this day I am reminded of the dreams that I have.  There are no where near as important or life-changing as the ones stated by MLK but they are still big dreams to me:

I have a dream that one day … my knee will stop hurting so much.  That the constant pain will go away and I will be able to exercise and work out with no restrictions.  If the surgery happens like it should this dream may be come a reality soon.

I have a dream that one day … doctors will find the cure to cancer.  It is an awful disease that takes thousands of great lives far too soon.  I dream that one day no one will ever have to hear those words, “you have cancer” and know that there is no hope of a cure.

I have a dream that one day … there will not be gender bias and prejudice in the work place. This is not something I deal with but two friends have brought it up in the last week that in their offices women are not treated the same.  This is 2014 and I wish by now this would no longer be a problem.

I have a dream that one day … I will inspire others.  There are so many great men and women I look up to and one day I want my actions and life choices to inspire another person.

I have a dream that one day … I will be able to grant a Make A Wish child’s dream come true.  Every time the organization is brought up in conversation or I read a story in the news about a child’s dream coming to fruition it brings a huge smile to my face. I hope that one day I can be the reason they are smiling so brightly.

I have a dream that one day …  I will be brave enough to share my real, unedited, unashamed bucket list and New Year’s Resolutions.  Until that time, baby steps.

I said it at the beginning and I will say it again, these are my personal dreams. I am in no way trying to compare them to Doctor King’s in importance or magnitude, I simply wanted to share the dreams his words, so many years ago, provoked me to pen.
What do you dream?

Loved this post, and the mix of humorous and serious dreams. I know what you’re saying about being brave enough to share certain aspects of your life. There are some personal things that I don’t think twice about sharing, but other things that I just end up deleting. Happy MLK day. Or, as the HR lady at my office referred to it, Happy “Postal Holiday”. (ugh)

I think it’s no shame being inspired by Dr. King.
And that is what you have been when you created this List! 🙂

About the inequality of men & women in life, work place & others…. I guess that will never change.
Women struggle in their life for the past 8.000 years & it might take more before we really equality in this world.
