Past Adventures: Victoria Falls

10/24/13 | Africa, family, Past Adventures, Southern Africa, Travel

One of my favorite aspects of my blog is my Past Adventures series where I expand on my travel Bucket List and I promise I will come back to this with more regularity.  I was reminded of it when a colleague asked me the other day if I had ever hear of Victoria Falls . I dropped what I was doing and immediately said, “yes, I love Vic Falls!” “Vic Falls?” they asked quizzically.  To abbreviate the name of a place I have only been once is actually a bit aggressive but this waterfall in southern Africa on the Zambezi River at the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe had such a profound impact on me that I will go ahead and call it Vic Falls.

This waterfall had only one drop measuring 355 feet from the center.  To put that in prospective the magnificent Niagara Falls which I visited last year only measure 167 feet.  Vic Falls is a UNESCO World Heritage Site like one of my other favorite European destinations; Bath, England from my Past Adventures post last month.

One of my biggest regrets from the trip is not taking higher resolution photos but as I was super afraid I was going to get wet these were taken with a waterproof digital camera:

To truly see the falls though, I recommend viewing them by helicopter.  I went with my family with my dad the front next to the pilot and I sat in the back seat in between my mother and brother.   It really was everything that was promised – an exhilarating experience with great views of the Victoria Falls, the gorges and views upstream of the Zambezi river.
When you visit Victoria Falls  David Livingstone’s quote when he first documented discovering the Falls is everywhere; “A sight so wonderful that angels must have gazed down on it in flight,” and after the helicopter ride I truly understood what he meant.  I just wished the scenic flight over Victoria Falls had an airtime of 12-13 minutes, I could have spent all day gazing down at the falls!

It was truly magnificent and I recommend it to everyone to visit at least once in their life!

    Beautiful!
I’ve always wanted to go to the Vic Falls, but never have (even though I’ve been to Harare before!)
Meanwhile I’ve traveled around the world to visit the Niagara Falls and although they are breathtaking, many people say that the Vic Falls top all.
I’m definitely adding Vic Falls to my bucket list now 🙂

Wow, can’t believe you got to visit them. Saw a program about them a while ago and it was awesome. They showed the statue too and visited both sides of the waterfall! Thanks for sharing!

I loved Victoria Falls! It looks like the water level was higher when you went; we were at the beginning of the low season, but one week before you could swim in the lake above the falls.
