One Year Since Sandy

10/29/13 | Hurricane Sandy, New York City

Hurricane Sandy was the deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, as well as the second-costliest hurricane in United States history.   It was unbelievably scary and at some points the wind whipping through New York City really did feel like it was blowing at 115 mph.

Last year I, along with millions of Americans, lost power due to the storm and felt the effects for months.  From the bedroom window of my old apartment I could see the East River – the water barricade was only sixty yards from the front door of my building.  At approximately 7:30pm one year ago this barricade broke and sent water down the streets of Manhattan and it began swallowing cars whole.  Below is the what I posted at 8pm on October 29th of last year.  It was called NYC is Flooding, and it really was:

——————————-

Hurricane Sandy has officially arrived! My apartment is on the border of Zone A and Zone B in terms of evacuation and the wind has been crazy all day, but the rain has now arrived. Mayor Bloomberg on his address said that he will be shutting the power off to lower Manhattan with all of the flooding.

I took these two photos on my phone 20 minutes apart of the major intersection I live on. The car alarms keep going off as the vehicles slowly become submerged.   I will continue taking photos but I will likely loose power any minute.  I will upload when it is all over and that is all for now!

Stay Safe in Sandy!
——————————-
It was absolutely crazy and something I never want to relive.  The next morning, with no power or heat, I walked down the six flights in my building and out into the daylight.  I have to say, I thought it was silly when I went to college that my parents gave me a flashlight, but I was so glad I kept it.  Here are a few of the dozens of photos I took on my walk the next morning:

I had never seen anything like it and hopefully will not again in my lifetime – thousands of people wandering aimlessly around an unlit city on a Tuesday morning.  There was no work and nowhere to go – the only people with a sense of purpose were walking north in an attempt to find an outlet to charge their phones.  I was off of work the entire week and without power for 10 days.  Among the people who were affected by the storm, I was very lucky.
A year later I no longer feel the effects of the storm and my life has completely returned to normal. Two of the reasons I remembered it has been a year already are the preparations for the New York City marathon this Sunday, which was canceled last year as a result of the storm, and seeing all of the candy flying off the shelves in anticipation of Thursday night.  Many kids did not get to experience on Halloween last year, as many neighborhoods canceled trick or treating in NYC! Hopefully they get double candy this year!
Were you directly impacted by the storm?

Ps. I’m linking up with two of my favorites today, Karly and Niki, for their weekly Totally Posted Tuesday!

I so remember that tree – I can’t believe we were neighbors at this time.

Wow that first picture is incredible. All of them are unbelievable. Here in NC we get our fair share of hurricanes too but we haven’t had a really bad one in a LONG LONG time. Sandy and Katrina were horrific storms.

The only time I’ve been impacted by a storm was 2 years ago in New York when Hurricane Irene hit. I’m from the west coast so I had no idea what to do. It was really scary!

I work in Hoboken where the damage was terrible. It’s so sad to see, but there’s hope in all the places being rebuilt and the charities still raising money. Great post to read!

Unbelievable how just last year we sat in the dark, huddling in the cold. While we were all safe thank god.. and our apartment was undamaged.. we lot power for about five days.. and watched our neighbors roof fly off and get stuck in the electrical wires (that was scary) gas rationing and hour long lines now seems like a distant dream..

It is hard to believe it’s already been a year when a lot of places are still in ruins. I hope we never experience something like that ever again!
