Black is My Favorite Color

Yes, you read that correctly, my favorite color is black.  My favorite color is black at age two days shy of 23 (if you have missed my blog for the past two weeks my birthday is Friday) and was black at age three. When people asked me as a small child what my favorite color was my answer was always, “BLACK”. Obviously I wanted to get this right so I asked the woman who raised me, my wonderful mother, and her answer was too good not to share:

“People typically ask little girls, ages 3-6-ish what their favorite color is and they expect the answer pink, maybe purple or yellow are OK answers too.   You {meaning me}, never one to shy away from answering truthfully, you would stick out your little chest, hold your head up high and in a very mature, proud, clear as a bell voice emphatically deliver the answer, “BLACK”.  At which point the person who asked the question would look at you quizzically and think that they heard the wrong answer, then they realized they heard correctly and would look at me wondering if I was raising a demon or the next exorcist child.  The silly ones would try to change your mind and you would have none of this!!!”

First off, a big thank you to my mom for telling me this and second, yay for me for sticking to my guns. As my mom recalls, I would also use my “favorite” crayon in the box, the black one, and would get very upset when it was gone. My mom said she always asked why my favorite color could not be green, as there were eight of those in the box, not one.  Whoops!

This post, while it may seem frivolous, is one of the more honest I have written in quite some time. Why you ask?  Because in my first blog interview and in a post last November on my favorite color I said that royal blue tops the charts in my book.  To me it is not a trend, but a staple and this is true but black trumps blue anytime.  Pun intended.
