Velvet Couches, the Latest Home Decor Trend

10/19/20 | Currently Coveting, home decor, Wayfair

Velvet couches are personally one of my favorite home decor trends and as the weather gets cooler, they seem even more relevant.   While the home makeover shows in England are not the same as the US (Joanna Gaines, please come the UK!)) there is still enough on Netflix to keep me occupied.  After binging all three seasons of Selling Sunset, my expectations are quite high and I also need a bit of a break in Pinterest from my wedding planning obsession.  Thus velvet couches are a fun alternative to place settings and bridesmaids dresses. Having seen dozens of velvet couches at this point I’ve decided  I love the sofas that are color rich and jewel toned!

That is not to say I haven’t seen an occasional pale pink that peaked my interest but personally I  prefer emerald, sapphire, and ruby hues as I think they add such a pop. Plus in the back of head I can hear my mom’s voice that dark hues show less dirt.  However, I have included velvet couches in a variety of shades and hues in case your preferences are different than mine.  In my browsing I was surprised that when it comes to purchasing , the prices really run the gamut from options like this will set you back $20,000 to this  on the lower end of the price range at $235 (though it has surprisingly good reviews!).   Find an assortment of my favorite velvet couches below:

I think most of you will agree that most of these can be gorgeous as statement pieces – they would be hard to add as an after thought but if you are desinign a space from scratch can serve as a great focal piece.  I especially love the intricate details in the options above including timeless wooden legs, hand tufting along the back, and densely padded foam cushions. And nearly every product description spoke about how durable the velvet is, some even describing it as resistant to spills, stains, wear and tear, putting it on par with sofas in other material like fabric or leather.

I was also not surprised to read in one article that, “jewel-tone sofa sales have risen by over 600% year-on-year and are staying firmly put for 2020”.  It went on to say the most popular style velvet couch is Tuxedo style which makes sense because it is the majority of the ones I saw when browsing and more than half of the ones above.  And while velvet is taking over, personally I think it should stick to couches as some of the velvet curtains, wallpaper, and carpets I am seeing look like they belong more in one of the royal palaces I’ve been visiting rather than a modern residence.

What do you think of velvet couches?

    Such great timing.

We are buying a new house and I need a statement piece for our new living room and this just might fit the bill.

Never would have considered it before and didn’t know that there was such a variety of styles, colors and sizes. Clearly I have not done any serious shopping yet.

Love, love and love them. Can’t decide which one I like the best.

The colors are so vivid and the styles are so sophisticated. I feel like I am looking at some museum pieces or the movie set of a very high end New York City apartment.

Never really thought of owning one myself but I will seriously consider it for my next home.

I love this trend in other’s houses, but it wouldn’t fit within our current home sadly!

Oh my gosh, finally something that I am ahead of the trend.

I have had and loved my Ralph Lauren blue velvet couches for quite some time now. So comfortable to sit on and they look pretty darn terrific too.

    Happy, Happy!
