Today is the 6th birthday of my blog. It has been six years since I first hit publish on my first post and boy has a lot changed. I now have a great job instead of an entry level one, I now live in a foreign country instead of 30 minutes from where I grew up, and I am no longer a self proclaimed bad writer – heck, I have published nearly half a million words at this point – practice makes perfect, or at least makes you better.
This is the 1,538 blog post I have written and I do not think there are many other things I have done that many times except for laps in the pool or flip turns. I have written about everything my heart has desired and have purposely kept only three topics off the blog; dating, religion, and politics. Everything else has been fare game and I have been typing away and thankfully, you all have been reading! I am also thankful that because of this blog I have so much of the last half decade documented and I can use it as my very own Wikipedia for everything from “what do you mean New England has covered bridges?” (asked this week at the office) or “where would you recommend eating in Barcelona?”. (In case you want to go down memory lane here is the 1st Birthday, 2nd Birthday, 3rd Birthday, and 4th Birthday, and 5th birthday posts!)
In fact, reading back on those past birthday posts there is something I wrote in 2014 which still rings very true today:
Is having a blog exhausting? Yes. Are there days when I wish it did not exist? Oh, there are some days I would love to give it back. Realistically though? My blog is my baby and I cherish it dearly. Sparkles and Shoes have added a new level of excitement to my life in New York City, encouraging me to document my days and even opening doors to a few exciting opportunities in the Big Apple. Over the past six months I have loved the interviews we have been doing am really looking forward to see how those continue to grow. I have no idea what the next year has in store for us but I am very excited for the adventure!
Four years later the only real edit would be changing the life in New York City to life in London but other than that, yup, pretty true! As always, this blog is sure to evolve as I do and is definitely more travel focused than when I started but I love to tailor the posts to reader requests so please, keep them coming!
Happy Birthday Sparkles and Shoes!
