I was only in Barcelona for six days in our short time in the gorgeous city but we made multiple trips to the Mercat de la Boqueria just off Las Ramblas. Many have described it as one of the best food markets in the world and while I do not have much to compare it to I was quite impressed. Officially called the Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria this local market is filled with stalls selling just about everything and the first time we visited on a Saturday afternoon d it was filled with locals stocking up on fresh food as the market is closed on Sunday.
As I had only landed two hours before my first order of business was to get a cup of coffee and then we agreed to wander up and down every isle before deciding on something to eat. I was impressed not only in the variety of the offerings but that some booths were like a local tent in a NYC farmer’s market and others were full blown restaurant. With the almost 100 booths there was so much to choose from but if I had to guess fresh fruit, chocolate, Spanish meats, and seafood where the most plentiful:
After wandering up and down nearly every isle we worked up quite an appetite and decided on a very popular stall with prosciutto and cheese sandwiches on fresh made baguettes which we took out of the covered market and ate on a makeshift bench in ate them in the Plaça de Sant Josep, the main square right behind the market.
Two days later Then we headed back the market from the first day to a place my mom spotted. Amidst all of the vendors selling fruit there was a fish hot spot filled with locals. Ramblers was even better than I could have expected. A glass of dry white wine in hand we stared with traditional Catalan bread with tomatoes followed by two entrees which we split – grilled salmon and grilled seafood scampi.
While our seafood at the restaurant stall was quite tasty I would not recommend it for the price and instead go with more grab and go food from one of the stalls. That said, both trips were incredibly delicious and I highly recommend a visit to anyone traveling to the heart of Barcelona!

That looks like an amazing market. I love all the different foods. And those strawberries are huge. A lot bigger than the ones we have here. Beautiful photos!

This really looks like you had a wonderful time. I love to visit markets like these… however, the fruit and veggie part is my favorite. I dont eat animals so I really do not like to look at dead animals 😉
