I have said it before, and I will say it again, I prefer trains over planes and especially over buses. I started writing this post in May (yes it has been a draft for that long) but after my experience on that Friday night – a 3.5 hour delay – I almost scrapped the whole thing. Then I remembered my colleague who headed to the airport only to have her flight canceled once she got there and she had head home only to go back the next day to a different airport and get on the same plane. I decided not to hit delete.
A few months later, I am back to being fully in love with trains. Here are a few Amtrak Instagrams form the past two years – I would have many more except I use the Amtrak app whenever possible!
Trains and I are great friends and for trips to Boston, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. it is by far the best way to travel. Here are just a few things I love about the train:
+ Stations are more centrally located in the heart of the city
+ Easy to arrive 15 minutes before departure with no problem
+ Quiet car
+ Free Internet
+ No hidden fees
+ No traffic or abrupt starting and stopping
+ No security lines or baggage limitations
+ Ability to move around
Granted, I know trains are not ideal for all trips, especially journeys over 300 miles ,and there are occasional problems, delays and such, but trains and I are having a love affair and I do not expect it to end soon!
What is your preferred method of travel?

I have been dying to ride the Amtrak somewhere! I’m so jealous of you!

When I lived in Boston, I LOVED the convenience (and price) of trains. I took the train to visit friends in New York City and Washington DC. And there’s always been an old-fashioned nostalgia of travelling by train (maybe I watched too many black & white movies that took place on a train?!)
Now that I’ve moved back west, the Amtrak/train system is not quite as efficient/connected. I never took Amtrak while in California, but now that I’m in Colorado and a mom, I know I’ll be planning a train trip from Denver to place like Chicago, Salt Lake City, and maybe even as far as Sacramento (CA)!

This is tooooo funny! I am such an anxious flyer, and I road my first train last year and it was such a fun experience! I felt so old-fashioned and even a little luxurious w/ a whole row to myself. I’m with ya girl! Xo, Alison

I also prefer trains.. I haven’t had any complications with flying, (although I’ve only flown a few times) but I love being able to see the scenery to and from wherever I’m traveling!

For short trips, the convenience and comfort of a train wins over flying. Clouds are great, but they are only so interesting for hours on end. With a train you really get to see part of the country.

I LOVE trains!! The last time I rode one was a while ago from Amsterdam to Germany. It was so easy. You just get on and someone checks your tickets later. It was awesome. Now if only we could get them to go as fast as planes! I would love to do some train travel across the US someday.

I’ve never been on a train! Would love to try it though. I definitely don’t care for flying.

I’m with you. I hate buses and avoid them at all costs. Air travel has only become increasingly difficult over the past decade of my adult life, not to mention more expensive. Trains are much more comfortable and you don’t have to pay the baggage fees or go through extensive security that you do at airports. I’m living in China now and have also traveled to Japan. The high speed trains need to get to America soon!! They are very safe because they are well maintained and they are always on time.

I’m 23 and have not been on a plane yet. I can’t remember the last time I took a train, but I do not like buses. Quiet and the ability to move around is very important. On buses, I just feel like it is usually too crowded and that people are invading my personal space. Plus, I don’t want to get pickpocketed! lol
