This weekend is one of those where everything has just fallen into place. Last night was cooking at a friend’s new apartment, followed by a get together, and then baring hoping. This afternoon has a coffee date in store and tonight is a friends birthday celebration including a VIP open-bar table at a concert. And who could forget my amazing blate with Ms. Karly Kim on Sunday. If the rest of this weekend is as fun as last night this weekend is going to be one to beat.
Repeat on your other eye and voilà, you’ve completed your winged eye liner! Here are a few additional tips:
All of these events are very different but one thing they are going to have in common is winged eyeliner. I wrote a post last year about black eyeliner and my love for it has not wavered, I am just stepping it up. Winged eyeliner has been a beauty staple for decades, and we’re still seeing it everywhere this season. Cosmo said it best in one of their March articles, “If Adele and Twiggy’s eye makeup had a baby, it would look like the eyes at Anna Sui’s Fall 2013 fashion show.”
The following mini-tutorial, adapted from BeautyLish, I will show you how to do a winged eyeliner in four steps. I am going off the assumption that you can handle rimming both bottom and top lashes. I recommend this for any sort of intense eye makeup for easy application, set a mirror at chin level and look downwards. Once that is done, here are four easy steps to get the look:

STEP 1
With your elbows rested on a table gently drag the pen along the lashline and past the top outer corner of your eye. Follow the upward curve of your eye with the eye liner. For a dramatic winged look, draw farther out and angle the liner more.
STEP 2
To create the winged effect start at the outer corner of the line you just drew and work back toward your eye, using a light sketching technique with the pen in short strokes. You can always go back and fill it in later.
STEP 3
As you get closer to the inner lash line, draw a thinner line. You want the effect of the liner to be thin to thick from the inner corner of the eye to the outer. Make sure you give the liner time to dry.
STEP 4
Make sure you follow the natural shape of your eye. Everyone has a different shaped eye, be sure to follow the natural shape of your eye. If you try to change the shape of you eyes with liner it makes them look smaller – very counterproductive. From there connect the liner to the inner corner of your eye. Then go back and fill in any missing spaces along the lash line.
Repeat on your other eye and voilà, you’ve completed your winged eye liner! Here are a few additional tips:
- The trick is to line as close to the lashes as humanly possible.
- The firmer you press the brush, the thicker the line will be.
- Use a hands-free mirror and keep your eye relaxed and slightly open as you line.
- This is very important: Once you finish lining your eye, do not blink for at least 10-15 seconds to allow the liner to dry.
- After you have lined both eyes, be sure to compare the liner on each eye. Are they even? If not, simply take a pointed q-tip and lightly drag the line along the eye to make it symmetrical to the other eye.
Practice makes perfect, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t get it right the first time. Keep trying and you’ll nail down the technique to apply winged eye liner in no time!

I love to use black eyeliner, but I never do my bottom lid as i’ve got quite small and cat-like narrow eyes. Might give it a go though, looks so cool!

Every time I try to do thick liner, like hers on the bottom, it looks like my eyeliner ran. Dammit, I want sexy raccoon eyes, not B-rated stripper eyes!
