Tuesday Trend: Toile

03/26/13 | home decor, Tuesday Trend

Spring is coming, despite what the thermometer might say, and I am very excited to pack away the plaid, tartan, and houndstooth in favor of more seasonal patterns and one of my favorite is toile.  This is definitely a word that I have always had trouble spelling until one of my good friends explained that it was easy to remember if you just thought of “toilet” without the “t”. Since then I have never messed it up.

Only recently did I learn that the proper name is Toile de Jouy consisting of a repeated pattern of a complex scene in a single color on a white or off-white background. For classic toile the pattern is usually in black, red, or dark blue but green, brown, and magenta are not heard of.

I used to have pants in this pattern that my younger brother aptly named “wallpaper pants”. I originally made fun of my mother too until I fell in love with a pink toile dress that I wore to my confirmation in 8th grade and since then have been a big fan of this intricate pattern.

Do you have anything in this pattern? How would you style it?

I think I’d prefer this pattern on a pillow or even wallpaper rather than clothes – but it is very pretty!

I don’t have anything in this print but one of my good friend’s parents’ house used to have this print as their wallpaper in their bathroom. And I loved it! I would always stare while I washed my hands all the little details. hahaha..

I see this on dishes a lot and always wondered what it was. It would be nice on fabric to just frame and hang on the wall. Hmmm.. Maybe a summer DIY project.

I use a kind of taupe colored toile duvet on my bed for part of the year. I love the richness it brings into the room paired with gold and greens. I also second Carly up there.. I would love a jacket in red.
