Past Adventures: Pompeii

02/19/13 | bucket list, Italy, Past Adventures

As I mentioned yesterday, this week I am taking a break from all of my usual posts about fashion and shoes to bring to you a peak into my favorite trips that I have taken.  Yesterday began with my journey to South Africa and the rest of the week will include more posts about some of the amazing places I have been able to cross off my bucket list.

I have been very lucky and have visited  the ruined city of Pompeii twice. After visiting many ruined cities it is amazing how much of this ancient city is left.   After learning that the city was covered for 1,700 years after the explosion of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. it makes sense how and why it is so well preserved.  I admit, I am one of the 2.5 million tourists who visit this partially buried Roman city is near the modern town of Naples, every year, and in fact, I have even been twice.

The first time I visited with my family on a glorious summer day and the second time I visited while studying abroad in Rome with my class on a spring day in the pouring rain.  It is amazing how your perception of the city changes depending on the weather, but yet, it is miraculous either way to see what was buried for hundreds of years under 20 feet of ash and pumice.   Here is one of my favorite photos from my second visit:

Even in the rain Pompeii is absolutely amazing!

I thought Pompeii was SO cool when I went! Granted, it was like 150 degrees out while we were there, so we didn’t spend as much time as we could have, but it was fascinating seeing all of the history…the people (and I believe dog as well?) frozen it the ash was super eerie!
