Eggnog Success!

12/17/12 | Christmas, Delicious Eats

From my 12 Days of Christmas you all know I have a ton of holiday traditions and one of my favorite things about the holidays is drinking eggnog.  It is not a great thing for my girlish figure but it definitely is quite tasty!
When hosting my Christmas party this year I wanted to do something different   For most of the parties that I host I bake but this year I made eggnog.  When I told people I was making it, from my best friend to the guy at the liquor store, they thought I was simply adding rum to the store bought eggnog.  FALSE.  I decided to make the eggnog from scratch and I am so excited how well it turned out.  I adapted the recipe for Amazingly Good Eggnog (here) for 20 servings and made a few substitutions.  Find my version of the recipe and photos of my spectacular drink below:
6 2/3 cups skim milk
3/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1 3/4 Teaspoons ground cinnamon
20 egg yolks
2 1/2 cups of sugar
3 cups of light rum
1 tablespoon and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups heavy cream
3/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg

(1) Combine milk, 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla, and cinnamon in a saucepan and heat over lowest setting for five minutes. Slowly bring milk mixture to a boil
(2) In a large bowl, combine egg yolks and sugar.  Whisk together until fluffy.  Whisk hot milk mixture slowly into the eggs.  Pour mixture into saucepan.  Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly for 3 minutes, or until thick.  Do not allow mixture to boil then let cool for one hour.
(3) Stir in rum, cream, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla, and nutmeg.  Refrigerate before serving.

All of my friends really like the eggnog and according to them, truly enjoyed my holiday party.  I am so glad my eggnog was a big hit!

Have you ever made eggnog?  I was surprise that some of party guests had never even tried it before, have you?

This post made me more hungry than thirsty, haha. Thanks for sharing your recipe though, I always end up buying ready-made eggnog, but this seems like an easy and simple recipe for it 🙂
