Food & The City: Max Brenner

There are two things I absolutely love about Manhattan, how wonderful this city is and all of the great food options.  Looking at my Instagram from the past week these two things are really apparent.

I have had quite a great week of friends, family, and food but it culminated in dinner with my mom last night at Max Brenner. Ever since I moved to New York I have wanted to try out this restaurant by the famous Israeli chocolate makers Max Fitchtman and Oded Brenner. The restaurant has no chocolate based entrees but the chocolate, or desert, menu includes a wide assortment of chocolate waffles, crepes, fondues, ice creams, drinks and martinis.  When I learned a few weeks ago that my mom would be coming to town I took it as the perfect opportunity to try this new eatery with her.  Of course I made the reservation on Open Table, which is essential at this hot spot as the wait was over an hour on a Sunday night if you did not have one.  We arrived ten minutes early for our reservation and while they prepared our table I had a chance to browse around the shop that also serves as the lobby/waiting area.

We were seated within a minute of our scheduled reservation time and the service was great.  My mom and I  started with the highly recommended burgers, which did not disappoint. I had the Brenner Burger: Max’s secret barbecue sauce, lettuce, tomato, cheddar and a vadalia onion ring on top while my mom had The Sloppy Max: BBQ pulled pork and creamy slaw on a soft brioche style bun, yummy!

However, the real highlight of the meal and the restaurant was the dessert.  In order to not miss out on any of the delicious options my mom and I got the Sharing (tasting for two).  The menu describes this decadent desert as consisting of a “tutti frutti waffle, fluffy chocolate sponge cake, banana tempura, milk & white chocolate “bark”, chocolate fondue with market fruit & marshmallows served with your grill & creamy pure chocolate sauce to roast and dip. crunch chocolate wafer balls & chocolate sauce on the side to pour.”  All of it was delicious (note that the word ‘chocolate’ was in the description SIX times!) but my favorite had to be roasting the marshmallows and then dipping them in the fondue.

    Oh I love his chocolade! Funny thing, when I studied at the university, we had a lecture given by a “successful businessman”. When we came into the classroom, we saw a man that looked familiar.. very familiar. You know, that distinctive face, that bold head.. We sat down and then he said – Hi, I’m Max Brenner! And we were like – yeah!! did you bring chocolades?)))

    I’m going the second weekend of December and I absolutely can’t wait. And, I might have to check out Max Brenner – look at the chocolate :O
