Saturday was one of my favorite days this year in New York. I woke up early, went spinning at FlyWheel, volunteered with a dozen friends at the St. Nicholas project giving back to those in need, enjoyed a delicious brunch at a new spot, tried a new cocktail bar, and then got a massage – it was pretty terrific. I enjoyed a glass of red sangria at Boulton & Watt where we had brunch and a Lady Suffolk at The Grey Mare, an amazing combination of Vodka, cucumber, green tea, lime juice, lemon juice, and Processco. Both drinks were delicious and I was surprised when one friend was not partaking – he went straight for the whiskey. Whiskey is one of those things I think I will never understand. It is not a drink I enjoy and I even went to the source – Dublin, Ireland – and tried it there, still no dice.
One of the top five things I wanted to do when in Dublin was visit the Jameson Factory, despite not drinking whiskey, it is something you do. However, I was very sad to hear that it was closed for a few months and after a moment of sadness I came up with a Plan B – research told me the newly opened Teeling Whiskey Distillery was a great option. It was a lovely day outside, albeit a bit cold, so I loved the chance to head inside the factory to take tour. I loved how realistic the hour long tour was with all of the touching, smelling, tasting, and feeling (it was so hot to bit in a real distillery) and I loved the chance to touch the malted barley.
When the guided tour of the Teeling Whiskey Distillery is complete you end up in the tasting room where the dozen people on the tour had already chosen one of the two main tasting options. The first is the Teeling Tasting which includes a sample of the Teeling Small Batch & Handcrafted Whiskey Cocktail for €14 and the second is the Teeling Trinity Tasting with samples of the Small Batch, Single Grain and Single Malt for €20. Even though I am not a whiskey fan I decided to go for the second option, to really get a sense for the product and see if maybe there was one I liked. I tried all three and the tour guide actually told that I was the only person she had ever seen grimace after tasting all three – yup, still not a fan. (You can read more about the options here). It was a great experience though!
It turns out I would have been better off with tasting option one because if you have been around the blog for a while you may recall I fell in love with an orange liquor called Aperol in Vienna last fall I had my first Aperol Spritz cocktail at Palmenhaus on the grounds of the Hofburg Palace and then enjoyed it at Gasthaus Pöschl in downtown Vienna, and a few days later on the the rooftop of the Prince U Hotel in Old Town Square, Prague, Czech Republic. I brought a bottle home with my and enjoyed it back in New York City this Spring. Long story short mixing Teeling whiskey with Aperol was a delicious combination and one I would definitely enjoy again!
What do you think of whiskey?

I’ve never had whiskey outside of a whiskey sour. Maybe a whiskey tasting is something I should do, too!

Whiskey for me is when I have a chest cold like now. Helps me cough up all of the gunk. My dad used to drink this junk like it was water. Only other time is winter when I want to keep warm I might drink 1 shot and be done with it just before I leave the bar and walk home.

I’m not a whiskey fan either, but I think that a tour would still be a lot of fun! Especially when in Ireland!
