The Sushi Breakdown

09/06/13 | Delicious Eats, Instagram

Happy Friday! Sushi is one of my all time favorite dishes.  Lunch, dinner, solo, massive group settings, you name it and I was eagerly enjoy sushi.  At one very authentic restaurant I was at I announced to my friends that I was, “really ready for some sushi”, and the waitress must have overheard because I was given a bowl of rice.  I thought it was a weird version of an appetizer course but realized I must have been mistaken when I was the only one who got it. It was then I learned that the word “sushi” actually refers to only the sweet, vinegar rice not  all the delicious stuff that is delivered to our wooden board at the sushi bar, the whole cuisine of fish, rice and otherwise.

For those of you who were in the dark like me, here is a breakdown:
Maki: Rolled up sushi with rice and seaweed.  Also known as a hand roll.
Nigiri: A piece of raw fish topped on the rice ball with a bit of wasabi under the slice of fish.
Sashimi: Plain stripes or slices of raw fish or seafood.

I am lucky living in Manhattan that I have so many amazing sushi options close to my apartment and office.  Sushi for me is a great pick-me-up lunch and a great excuse to get a few minutes of fresh air during a long work day.  For make my favorite options are salmon and avocado or tuna and avocado, but never spicy.  Usually I choose which ever looks the freshest and/or has brown rice.

If you follow me on Instagram you will see many photos of sushi that I get delivered, at very reasonable lunch specials or with friends at restaurants. Stay tuned for more!

Yes, I think I should give it a fair chance (somewhere reputable! haha!). I’ll have to look up local restaurant reviews and then drag my boyfriend along with me. 🙂

Try it, definitely! It’s easy and creative! Also hot sushi are yummy too, but I haven’t tried cooking them yet.

Sushi is my all time, favorite food too! I love trying different sushi restaurants in my area but I’m always afraid of finding a questionable restaurant at the same time. My favorite type is probably the Maki though, so good!

I’ve only had sushi once but the texture totally freaked me out. I don’t know if I could handle it again.

I love sushi! I lived in Japan for a while and had to restrict myself to kaiten sushi twice a week! Otherwise I’d have been there every day.

Everyone buzzes about sushi and I have had two bad experiences that have left me thinking that I don’t like it… but I want to like it! haha (1st time was homemade by a friend, bleck. 2nd time was from Sam’s Club, gross.) Maybe this guide will help me order something I’ll actually like.

I am OBSESSED (actually, that might be an understatement) with sushi–my roommates and I have it at least once a week, and I get it sometimes for lunch at the Conde Nast cafe. If you’re ever in Astoria, head to Watawa sushi. It’s the best there is!

I tried sushi a few times and I can’t say that I like it! I wish I did though, since its really healthy and the majority of my friends go out for sushi night. Maybe I will enquire the taste down the road! 🙂

    Xo,
    Sincerely Miss Ash

I love sushi! I love most kinds, but I’m not fond of fresh fish or salmon, so I choose smoked or baked or with soft cheese and caviar, veggies. I even learned how to make sushi by myself, it’s pretty easy. I often choose any filling that’ll find in the fridge. I mostly make futomaki as I try to use all the nori.
