Past Adventures: Bath, England

09/18/13 | Bath, England, Europe, H+M, North Face, Past Adventures, Travel, United Kingdom

While in college one of my few regrets was not taking a semester abroad.  Granted, I was swimming the whole time and did take an amazing three week course in Rome but spending a few months getting lost in a European city sounds amazing to me.

I was lucky enough, though, that I was able to visit three different friends during my spring break my junior year and see where they were studying.  I started out in London, then moved to path, and finished with a short visited to Cambridge University. The entire trip was a whirlwind but Bath was definitely the unexpected highlight of the trip.

As I wanted to see three friends across the pond in one week I only stayed in Bath for two days but I was able to do three of the “big” things you are supposed to do; visit the Roman Baths, the Crescent, an take a tour of Bath Abbey all of which I recommend.  Bath was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and here are a few pictures from my trip:

(1) Visit the Historic Roman Baths

The baths are considered the heart of the World Heritage Site.  Over 2,000 years ago the Romans built a magnificent temple and bathing complex around Britain’s only hot spring and that still flows with natural hot water. See the water’s source and walk where Romans walked on the ancient stone pavements around the steaming pool.

.

.

(2) Visit the Royal Crescent and the Circus

Built between 1767 and 1775 the Royal Crescent is one of the world’s best known landmarks and consists of  approximately 30 houses. Both The  Royal Crescent and The Circus were the masterpiece of John Wood the Elder. The Circus is also considered one of the key reasons Bath was awarded the title of World Heritage Site.

.

 (3) Visit Bath Abbey and take a Tower Tour
Bath Abbey has been a place of Christian worship on this site for over 1,200 years, although three different churches have occupied the site of today’s Abbey.   This house of worship is absolutely gorgeous –  the magnificent stained glass windows, columns of intricate stone and some of the finest fan vaulting in the world, create an extraordinary experience of light and space.  The Tower Tours, every day except Sunday, offer the chance to go behind the scenes and enjoy stunning views of the city. My favorite part of the tour was visiting the Abbey bell and ringing chamber, being able to stand behind the clock face and stand on top of the Abbey’s vaulted ceiling.

.

Emily was lucky enough to spend the entire semester studying in this gorgeous location and when talking with her about my trip, especially that it was only two days, there were many things I was not able to do so when we go back I plan on:

  • Going a Jane Austen tour especially as this was the focus of Emily’s study abroad in Bath and I am jealous of all of the amazing field trips she used to go on.
  • Have brunch at the famous Tap Room. I have a picture from the outside and at the time captioned it, “the pump room where Jane Austen used to go!” Next time, I will join her!
  • Visit the Thermae Spa and bite the bullet and pay the £56.00 for the full day spa session
.
.
Just writing these things makes me excited, until next time!

The architecture is beautiful. I almost had the opportunity to visit London but oh well.

I wish I will save enough money to visit England.

If I weren’t an engineering major, and could travel and study abroad, I would do it in a second. I love getting to see pictures like these! It looks gorgeous!

    Have a great day!
