When I moved into my new apartment in June and I made a decision people are still questioning – I did not get cable. Not only did I not get cable, I did not get even get basic channels. What does that mean? When I turn on the TV and click through channels 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, ect. the screen is blue and says “no signal” and I am completely okay with that. How do I still get my TV fix in? Three ways:
(1) High Speed Internet. Really high speed – I need to be able to stream The Voice Blinds and upload photos to my blog without a lag in either (aka, what I am doing right now). You’ve got to love the monopoly the cable company has on my New York CIty apartment building – really good internet is much, much more reasonable than basic channels. Go figure.
(2) Hulu Plus. Sure, there are half a dozen shows I would tell you that I “need” to watch. The thing is? I watch them on Hulu Plus and live stream them through my BlueRay player onto my big screen TV and it is great. Plus with the ability to pause, rewind, stop, and start again it is practically DVR! This Fall, there are five shows that are “musts”, two I watch when nothing else is recorded, and two new ones I am giving a try:
(3) Netflix. When I have there is nothing on Hulu I turn to Netflix and between reruns of my favorite shows and series I never got into when they were on the air, I have yet to run out of options. And, don’t get me started on the movies and documentaries. I love Netflix – the best $7.99 ever. Here are few of my current favorites:
That is why I don’t have cable and why three months in, I am not missing it!
Although, Mary or Lindsay, if you are reading this I may need to watch The Award shows at your place! And by that I mean the red carpet of most of the shows and then definitely the full Oscars. I’ll bring the wine, I promise!
