On Friday night, as you may have seen on Instagram, I attended a black-tie optional ball at the main D.C. train station – Union Station. This was the same ball I attended the night before my graduation two years ago, albeit much less crowded. The theme was Starry Night and this was apparent everywhere but as we had learned from experience even though heavy hors d’oeuvres are advertised it is really best to have dinner before, especially with the open bar!
Because I went to Georgetown as well and know the area I was allowed to pick the spot for dinner Friday night and chose Sequoia. It is an American eatery on the Potomac River and we ate dinner on the multilevel outdoor terrace with great views of the Kennedy Center and Key Bride. I have mentioned the restaurant before when I went last Easter for dinner and took this photo of my maxi dress on the boardwalk in front of the establishment. I enjoyed the Seafood Cioppinno which had scallops, mussels, shrimp, lobster, clams, fin fish, potato, bok choy in an orange broth. Delicious!
As the invitation said, “The culminating event for the Class of 2014 is the annual Senior Ball, a gala event at Union Station in Washington, DC the night before Commencement ceremonies. Each year, more than six thousand graduating Seniors, family members, and university staff/administrators attend the festivities, as it is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
The ball was warm and very overcrowded but with one of my good friends Sam, in the white midi dress, we managed to have a great time! I am glad we stuck to our pre-agreed plan and only drank clear drinks – vodka soda for me and gin and tonic for her because we were constantly being bumped and red wine and white dresses certainly do not mix.
Congratulations to my brother on graduating and full recap will come later this week!
